Concepts and Perceptions of Death and Experiences of Bereavement in People with Developmental Disabilities: A Systematic Review

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to review and analyze previous studies dealing with concepts, understanding, and perceptions of death and/or dying, and bereavement experienced by persons with developmental disabilities (DD). Total 40 studies which had published in 1982-2017 analyzed and result indicates that 1) number of studies on this topic is continuously increasing, 2) most studies were conducted for adults with DD, and their families and service providers sometimes participated in studies, 3) major topics from reviewed studies were categorized by three, including (a) concept of death and perceptions of bereavement, (b) effects of bereavements, (c) intervention and/or death education programs, and 4) concepts of death includes (a) death, dying or bereavements of specific person, including family members and/or significant others, and (b) general concept of death. Based on findings, recommendations and implications for further research and practices supporting people with DD experienced bereavement or preparing dying were discussed.
